Praying with Scripture

In her first sermon to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) our General Minister and President, Rev. Teresa Hord Owens, underscored the importance of becoming more biblically literate as a denomination. This part of her sermon spoke directly to my spirit:

When you abide in Christ, your spiritual life is one of prayer, Bible study, and other spiritual disciplines that develop your spiritual muscles so that you can indeed love and serve as Christ has commanded. The more we abide in Christ, the stronger we become...Only when we are abiding in the Word of God, seeking to discern the light of Scripture; only when we are in relationship with God through prayer and meditation, when we seek to enter into that secret place that Psalm 91 invites us to enter---only when we abide in Christ, and when Christ abides in us, and when we are obedient to the command to love others as Jesus has loved us, will we be prepared to move forward as a church that is committed to being the church for this time.

The heart of who we are is based on our deep commitment to scripture, how we relate to it both in community and reading it individually. I think our founders meant for us to take the scripture so seriously that we might disagree on its interpretation. We take it so seriously that many in our denomination are academics and experts in the field of Biblical Studies.

I believe that the Bible is a gift to us! It is full of wisdom about how we should live our lives, and worship and treat one another. In a world full of conflicting information, we, as Christians, get to base our whole lives on this rich piece of literature that teaches us something about who God is and who we are expected to be.

If you would like to take a journey that combines prayer and scripture, I want to invite you to Monday Evening Bible Study. We will read through the Gospel of Mark, through daily meditation and study. We will start next Monday, Sept. 10 at 7pm in the parlor. I will also make available the weekly reading assignments so you can follow along on your own if you are not able to make it in person!

Peace,
Megan
